Swarm signs free agents Dunn and Ferreira

Swarm adds depth to defensive end with two signings

The Georgia Swarm today announced that it has signed two free agents, defenseman Matt Dunn and transition player Tyler Ferreira, to two-year deals.

“We are very excited to announce two free agent signings for the Swarm,” Swarm Owner and General Manager John Arlotta said. “Matt is a former All-American at the University of Maryland who we are really excited to see playing box lacrosse. He is a big, athletic defender who is currently in the extended tryout process for the U.S. National Indoor Lacrosse Team.

“Tyler is an experienced NLL player who brings great versatility to the Swarm having spent time playing both the offensive and defensive ends for several NLL teams. He plays with a number of our current Swarm players in the summer leagues and comes highly recommended as both a player and a person. We’re excited that as free agents with a choice of teams, both Matt and Tyler chose the Swarm as their next career stop in the National Lacrosse League.”

Dunn, 24, is a 2016 graduate of the University of Maryland. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Dunn played 63 games as a defenseman for the Terrapins, recording two points (1G, 1A), collecting 55 ground balls and causing 32 turnovers.

A three-year veteran of the MLL, Dunn was named the 2018 MLL Defensive Player of the Year with the Dallas Rattlers. In 37 career games with the Rattlers, Dunn has seven goals, 54 ground balls, and 21 caused turnovers.

“I’m excited to just try to learn as much as I can and try to ask some of these older guys questions when I have them, use them as mentors where I can,” Dunn said. “I’m hoping to learn a lot fast.”

Ferreira, 25, was picked No. 18 overall in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Bandits. The Dowling College alum played for Buffalo in 2016 and Rochester in 2017. In eight career games, Ferreira has recorded seven points (2G, 5A), 31 loose balls and three caused turnovers over eight games played.

“I’m really excited,” Ferreira said. “Obviously, I wasn’t in the NLL last year, so for John to call me and express interest, it meant a lot, and I’m happy that I was able to get a deal done. I’m excited to be joining such a great organization.”

Listed at 6-foot-1 and 176 pounds, the lefty spent five seasons in the Ontario Jr. A Lacrosse League, most of it with the Brampton Excelsiors. From 2010-14, Ferreira played in 101 regular season games as a forward and recorded 172 points (93G, 79A). In postseason action, Ferreira saw time in 42 games and posted 69 points (23G, 46A).

In the summer of 2018, Ferreira played on the Brampton Excelsiors in Major Series Lacrosse. Listed as a forward, Ferreira played eight games and finished with 23 points (11G, 12A).
