Swarm adds a fourth Thompson to roster

(DULUTH, GA) – After acquiring a third Thompson Brother, Jerome, to its roster this past Tuesday during the National Lacrosse League (NLL) trade deadline, the Georgia Swarm added yet another Thompson to the team on Friday afternoon.

The Swarm received a surprising phone call late Thursday night from none other than NBA star Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors, who expressed interest in joining the team. The two parties agreed to a three-year contract this morning and Thompson will join the Swarm for this Saturday’s home contest against the Buffalo Bandits at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Field at Infinite Energy Arena.

Despite the fact that the Warriors are currently 68-7 and in the midst of chasing NBA history, Thompson has abruptly decided to put his basketball career on hold and will join fellow Thompson’s, Lyle, Miles and Jerome on the Swarm.

“Basketball has become too easy, we’re 61 games over .500 right now; I need a new challenge in my life,” Thompson said. “I recently caught a Swarm game on FOX Sports Southeast when I was in Atlanta, and I instantly knew this was my true calling in life. With three Thompson’s on the team, I said to myself, ‘Let’s make it four.’”

Thompson, who has never played box lacrosse in his life, is expected to play on offense for the Swarm due to his natural scoring abilities. With his 6-foot-7, 215-pound frame, he is also expected to be utilized on defense as well during certain situations.

The 26-year-old was averaging 22.5 PPG, 3.8 RPG and 2.0 APG for the Warriors this season; with that stat line, Thompson is estimated to average around 2.2 goals per game, 0.5 assists per game, and 2.1 loose balls per game with the Swarm.

“Sometimes you have to take a gamble,” Swarm head coach Ed Comeau said. “We’ll try to teach him all of the lacrosse fundamentals tonight at practice, and hopefully he’ll be game ready by tomorrow. Like the NBA, the NLL features a shot clock, and a lot of pick-and-roll action, so we think Klay’s skillset can make the adjustment. Unfortunately, we don’t have a 3-point shot in lacrosse.”

“Shocked, I’m at a loss of words,” former teammate Stephen Curry said. “I wish Klay the best of luck… I guess.”

Thompson will wear No. 11 with the Swarm after paying new teammate Joel White a whopping $1 million for the rights to the number on the team. White is now the highest paid player in the NLL.

When asked what he’s most looking forward to during his new adventure in pro lacrosse, Thompson was quick to respond.

“I can’t wait to grow out a braid like the rest of the Thompson Brothers.”
