Swarm re-signs Johnny Powless; inks four draft picks

Four-time champion Powless returns to Swarm offense for his fourth season with team

(DULUTH, Ga.) – The Georgia Swarm today announced that the team has re-signed forward Johnny Powless to a one-year contract. The Swarm also signed four of its draft picks from the 2017 NLL Draft: Frank Brown (No. 24 overall), Nik Farrus (No. 42 overall),Bennett Drake (No. 47 overall) and Adam Osika (No. 59 overall) to two-year contracts.

Powless enters his seventh season in the NLL as he returns to the Swarm. Already a four-time NLL Champion by age 24, the Six Nations, Ontario native helps bolster the left side with his dangerous snipes and creativity. Last season, Powless played in 10 regular season games and recorded 50 points (23G, 27A) while finishing with a .324 SPCT. In the Swarm’s postseason sweep, Powless was active in three games and finished with 12 points (5G, 7A). He recorded 10 of those points just against the Saskatchewan Rush.

“Johnny has been a valuable piece to our organization and was a key contributor to our championship season,” Swarm head coach Ed Comeau said. “At the young age of 24, we know that Johnny still has more potential he can tap into and can continue to demonstrate why he’s one of the top left-handed threats in the NLL.”

In the 2017 NLL Draft, Georgia picked Brown in the third round (No. 24 overall). Selected to be a right-handed defenseman/transition player, the Hobart College alum finished his collegiate career with 120 points (81G, 39A). Listed at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, the team captain of the Statesmen finished his senior year with 50 points (32G, 18A), leading his team in points and goals.

The Swarm selected Farrus in the fourth round of the 2017 NLL Draft (No. 42 overall). The lefty forward from the Orangeville Northmen (Jr. B) led the Founders Cup with 35 points (10G, 25A) and helped the team win its second straight Jr. B national title. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, Farrus is projected to compete for an offensive position for the Swarm.

Georgia picked up Drake in the fifth round (No. 47 overall). A nephew of assistant coach Dan Ladouceur, the University of Albany alum will be a right-handed defenseman/transition player. At Albany, the 5-foot-11, 190 pounder finished his collegiate career with 111 points (80G, 31A).

Osika was the last pick of the night for Georgia, selected in the sixth round (No. 59 overall). Another left-handed defense/transition player for defensive depth in the Swarm roster, Osika is also a graduate of the University of Albany. The 6-foot-2, 205 pound lefty finished his career with 59 points (43G, 16A), 32 of which came in his senior year.

“We are excited to add some new young players to our training camp roster,” Comeau said. “These players were carefully selected based on their ability, our needs and most importantly their character. We are excited to see how they perform at training camp trying to crack our rosters.”

The contract for Frank Brown is currently pending league approval.
